Sciatica is a term for pain that radiates down the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down the back of your legs.
Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body at a time, however, it can happen bilaterally, depending on the cause.
The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body.
If you are experiencing lower back pain that is radiating into your buttock or gluteals, or down the back of your leg, it could be an indication of a sciatic nerve or potential disc issue.
Low back pain and back pain in general can be a debilitating condition that affects most adults of all ages.
Up to 80% of the population will have experienced some form of low back pain in their life.
People suffering from back pain may find difficulty in performing everyday tasks such as sitting, driving, standing for long periods of time or any physically laborious activities.
Conservative care including chiropractic treatment can help alleviate back pain and significantly increase quality of life during episodes of pain.
Mid and upper back pain can occur either in the middle of your back or in between your shoulder blades.
The thoracic spine, or mid back, is made up of 12 separate vertebrae, the posterior ribs and small rib joints, and all of the layers of muscles and tissue that are layered on top.
Most people who experience mid back or upper back pain feel it when they bend forward or backwards, twist, or sometimes even with deep breaths.
A common cause of mid back pain is a rib injury or rib joint fixation.
Anatomically, the thoracic spine and the ribs articulate at two small joints, and if these little joints experience a blunt force or sustained tension, they can become fixated or irritated and cause pain and symptoms.
