Dr. Tara Zempel Kern is a native of western New York and has relocated to the DMV area to provide chiropractic services to Montgomery county.
After graduating from John Carroll University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Dr. Kern continued her education by obtaining a Doctorate of Chiropractic from New York Chiropractic College.
While in chiropractic college, Dr. Kern achieved certification in Whole Foods Nutrition, Applied Kinesiology, ConnecTX (a soft tissue therapy), and custom stabilizing orthotics.
At Complete Chiropractic & Rehabilitation, we use a variety of different techniques to accommodate each individual's needs and comfort.
The chiropractic adjustment is used to ensure proper alignment of the joints which promotes healthy function of the neuromusculoskeletal system.
When spinal vertebrae are out of place, there is more tension on the soft tissue structures that attach to these bones.
Ligaments, tendons, and muscles are under stress and cannot operate to their fullest potential.
The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to realign the vertebrae by activating the soft tissue structures around it, and using a quick, direct, controlled force to the joint which will improve range of motion.
Essentially, dry needling is a technique used to treat trigger points or "knots" within a muscle by disrupting areas of tightness, allowing for the muscle to function at its full capacity.
No- it most certainly is not.
Dry needling technique requires a physical examination, diagnosis, location of anatomic points based on a western understanding of anatomy, neurology, and physiology.
It does not use theories of meridians, energy, pulse points or tongue characteristics to make a determination of why or where to place a needle.
Soft tissue is a collective term used to refer to ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
These soft tissues attach the vertebrae (spinal bones) and help to control movement of the joints.
Injury causes inflammation which typically results in pain and can create trigger points or fibrous adhesions.
This fibrous adhesions can be thought of as glue that holds the soft tissues together.
These tissues need to be able to move, bend, and flex- they do not want to be immobile!
Have you ever had a "knot" in your back?
If you have been injured, damage has occurred to your soft tissue structures.
Initially, you are in an "Intensive Care" phase of treatment, where the main goal is to decrease the inflammation, reduce pain, and increase range of motion.
After this phase, you begin to feel better, but this is NOT the time to stop treatment.
Now we enter the "Rehabilitative or Corrective Care" phase.
This part of treatment is extremely important to prevent further injury.
The muscles, ligaments, and tendons that were damaged during your injury need to be strengthened and rehabilitated.
